"Chal chal chal mere Haati, oh mere saathi" campaign

In Mumbai city, you must have seen elephants walking on the street, have you?

But imagine if they become the endangered species like so many other animals, Tiger for instance. We need to protect them so that they don’t become extinct. We want them to live forever and forever. Right? Then we need to take care of them and learn to make friendship with them. Elephants are very friendly and they can remember the kindness for a long, long time.

But unfortunately, many times elephants are poached for their ivory. The number of elephants is diminishing because their habitat is destroyed by industries and redevelopment. We need to be aware of their needs and must make sure that they don’t disappear.

Have you seen the film ‘Haati Meri Saati? This was a cute film about the friendship between human and elephant

And now Environment and Forests Minister Jairam Ramesh has launched the 'Haathi Mere Saathi' campaign as part of an initiative to boost the protection and the welfare of India's endangered elephants. "This initiative is aimed at increasing awareness among people and developing not just friendship but also companionship between people and elephants," he said.

The mascot, logo and website (www.haathimeresaathi.org) of the campaign were also unveiled

"The country's national heritage animal needs its people and the idea behind the campaign is to mobilise this support," said Vivek Menon, executive director of WTI and a member of the task force.
